【摘要】:Threeforcescanmechanicallydegradeagranularactivatedcarbon:impact,crushing,andattrition.Ofthesethree,attrition,orabrasion,isthemostcommoncauseofdustformationinactualservice.Publishedtestprocedurestodeterminethe"hardness"ofactivatedcarbonsproduceresultsthatingeneralcannotbecorrelatedwithfieldexperience.Forexample,theball-panhardnesstestappliesallthreeforcestothesampleinavariablemannerdeterminedbythesize,shape,anddensityoftheparticles.The"stirringbar"abrasiontestmeasuresattritionsolongastheparticlesizeissmallerthan12mesh.Thereissomeevidence,however,thattheresultsofthistestmethodareinfluencedbyparticlegeometry.Theproceduresetforthinthisguidemeasurestheeffectoffrictionforcesbetweenvibratingorslowlymovingparticlesduringthetestandmaybeonlyslightlydependentonparticlesize,shapeanddensityeffects.1.1Thisguidepresentsaprocedureforevaluatingtheresistancetodustingattritionofgranularactivatedcarbons.Forthepurposeofthisguide,thedustattritioncoefficient,DA,isdefinedastheweight(orcalculatedvolume)ofdustperunittime,collectedonapreweighedfilter,inagivenvibratingdeviceduringadesignatedtimeperunitweightofcarbon.Theinitialdustcontentofthesamplemayalsobedetermined.Granularactivatedcarbonisdefinedasaminimumof90%beinglargerthan80mesh(0.18mm)(seeTestMethodsD2867).1.2ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Theinch-poundunitsgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.1.3Thisguidedoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisguidetoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
